NYTimes crossword puzzle solver, real estate lawyer, independent scholar and literary sleuth Arnie Perlstein spoke at the Jane Austen Society of North America’s New York Metropolitan Region’s May 1 meeting… His topic was “shadow stories” in J.A.’s works and his talk was as intriguing and stimulating as it was explosively controversial (hint: Jane “hid” an out-of-wedlock pregnancy in every novel and leaves clues to a real-life baby…) Even if partially true, his theories show our Ms. Austen to be smarter, defter with the pen, and exponentially more fascinating than previously imagined… which is, of course, completely believable.

Thank you SO much for your kind words about my talk! I was just horsing around and Googling everyone in my family out of curiosity, and then I Googled myself, and was very surprised, in the most positive way, to be directed to your blog review.

I have often said to people that even if only 25% of what I claim is valid (and obviously I think 100% of it is valid!), then that should be an earthquake in the world of Jane Austen—I was pleased to see you thinking the same thought independently.

Arnie–I actually visited your blog the day of the talk, and I’ll certainly poke my head in, again… In the meantime, you can set up a Google alert for yourself, so you don’t have to search to see when other Janeites blog you… Google will send you an email when your name crops up.
